Fakes in Nicaragua
Fake cigars are for sale in the booming country of Nicaragua.April 30, 2012. Around tourist areas, including the airport in Nicaragua, fake cigars are available for sale. Brands such as Cohiba, Padron, 5 Vegas, Joya de Nicaragua and NUB have been found around the country. Cigar Journal has found the cigars in Managua, Leon, Granada, and Masaya.
The fakes range in price from $.60 to $1.20 per cigar. The fakes tasted are low to medium quality cigars with bands either stolen from a factory or created to look like the factory bands. Most cigars for sale appear to have bands that were created by counterfeiters and do not match the authentic bands exactly.
One sample of a "premium" cigar tasted by Cigar Journal had a "sugared" tip.
Nicaragua is a growing cigar country. It has recently become the second largest exporter of premium cigars in the world.
Editorial Note: Cigar Journal strongly advises cigar lovers to not purchase or smoke these counterfeit cigars. The taste is not the same as the real brand of cigars. All samples tasted were not paid for but were given as samples from the venders of the fakes.
